Digital Rights Management Systems (DRM Systems) are used to manage the digital content by an organisation.
When thinking about DRM it is too easy to be distracted by the more publicised music and video discussions. The truth of the matter is that DRM refers to a much bigger spectrum. Whereas the afore mentioned consumer DRM focuses on eliminating the risk of duplication, Enterprise DRM is focused on reducing the risk of exposure.
Enterprise DRM allows an organisation to control and manage their most crucial asset – their information. It enables the owner of the information to determine who can access information, how and when it can be used, and to record all uses of that information.
The basis of any enterprise DRM solution should have three main focuses.
- Security should be most important to organisations. All electronic documents, communications and licenses should be encrypted. Policy driven access controls should also be implemented with all electronic media (email, office files, cad files, PDF's etc) requiring authorisations for access, edit and redistribution.
- Ease of use, the system must not affect the usability of existing applications and therefore must not create barriers to acceptance.
- Ease of deployment and scalability to enterprise proportions are prime considerations. Solutions must work with a variety of common desktop applications.
